Former Sri Lankan batsman Avishka Gunawardene has been appointed as the Batting Coach of the Afghanistan national Cricket team.
Gunawardene, who has represented Sri Lanka in 6 Tests and 61 ODIs, has had several coaching stints with domestic teams and the national team.

An independent anti-corruption tribunal of ICC cleared Gunawardene of two charges against him under the Emirates Cricket Board’s Anti-Corruption Code, allowing him to resume participation in cricket last May.
44-year old Gunawardene has worked as the Head Coach of Sri Lanka A team, batting coach of the national team and the Sri Lanka Under 19 team, as well as several interim stints with clubs and provincial teams in Sri Lanka.

Afghanistan’s next international assignment is scheduled against Pakistan, where they will play 3 ODIs in Sri Lanka. Gunawardene’s knowledge on local conditions will give Afghanistan a slight advantage when they take on Pakistan next month.
