Jayasuriya rips through Australian batting after Chandimal double-century

Australia tour of Sri Lanka 2022

Debutant Prabath Jayasuriya ripped through the Australian batting line-up after Dinesh Chandimal’s maiden double hundred to set up an innings and 39-run win over Australia to draw the series 1-1.

Fortune was certainly on Chandimal’s side throughout the Test, as the right-hander survived another close call in the first session on day 4 after being struck in front by leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson on 141. He survived a caught behind appeal yesterday, when he was on 30 too.

However, after the lunch break, lucky or not, Chandimal broke free with a brilliant blitz, going from 154 to his double century in just 22 deliveries. The highlight of the knock was how he got to the landmark, smashing Mitchell Starc for a 4 and two sixes, one of those sixes landing on the street. He dominated the 10th wicket partnership alongside Kasun Rajitha as the pair put on 49, the latter’s contribution 0.

Chandimal became the 1st Sri Lankan to get to a double hundred against Australia in Tests, while Sri Lanka’s 554 is now the highest total for Sri Lanka against Australia.

Sri Lanka’s lead of 180 looked sufficient to give them the upper hand going into day 5 but few would have expected the capitulation of the visitors’ batting line-up in the final session, which saw them lose 9 wickets for 99 runs.

Prabath Jayasuriya had a debut to remember, taking 6 second innings wickets to complete a match bag of 12 for 177, a record for a debutant in Tests – 3rd best figures ever in Test Cricket.

The left-arm spinner brought all his experience to play in the game, bowling with beautiful flight and guile on a crumbling pitch.

Marcus Labuschagne and Cameron Green offered some resistance with a 38-run partnership for the 6th wicket, but Labuschagne’s dismissal meant a 4-day finish was almost an inevitability and Sri Lanka duly finished things off with half an hour of play left in the day.

Sri Lanka will be particularly happy with the performance in the game following the disastrous 1st Test, where they lasted just 22.5 overs in their 2nd innings. This is also the first time Sri Lanka has defeated by an innings.
