The Astoria Women’s Future Tournament which is being played at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association tennis courts has reached the semi-final stages of the draw.

Singles

Unfortunately for Sri Lanka, the local representatives Roshenka Fernando and Nethmi Waduge were knocked out in the 1st round of the tournament. Adithya Karunaratne managed to make it to the second round of the tournament before losing to Briton Alice Gillan.

As the tournament progresses, 2 more semi-final spots are left to be decided between Riya Bhata, Rushri Wijesundara, Alice Gillan and YeXin Ma. Riya Bhatia, an Indian representative, made it to the quarterfinals triumphing over her country woman Ramya Natarajan 6-4 and 6-2.

Bhatia is set to play the American Rushri Wijesundera in the quarterfinals. Wijesundera secured her spot beating Dhruthi Tatachar Venugopal of India 6-3 and 2-1 as the latter retired midway through the 2nd set.

Alice Gillan secured her quarter-final spot beating Adithya Karunartne in a close match that went to 3 sets; the scores read 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in favour of Gillan.

She is set to play YeXin MA from China in the final quarterfinal match. YeXin came to the quarterfinals triumphing over Angelique Svinos of Australia. She secured the match in the first 2 sets, 6-1, 6-3.

2 quarterfinal matches having already been played between Jennifer Luikham of India and Tamara Curovic of Serbia and Nidhi Chilmula of India and Josephine Boualem of France. Curovic and Boualem advanced to the semifinals.

Curovic beat Luikham in the quarterfinals in a close encounter which went to the final set. She lost the first set to Jennifer but managed to get back into the game, winning the next 2 sets (2-6, 6-4, 6-4).

To advance to the finals T Curovic must beat Boualem in the semi-final match. The latter beat Chilumula in the quarterfinals 7-6(5), 6-1 to advance to the semis.

Doubles

In the doubles category of the tournament one semi-final spot has already been secured by the team of Isabelle Boulais of Canada and YeXin Ma of China after they received a walkover from the Indian team of Riya Bhatia and Dhruthi Venugopal.

The remaining 3 semi-final spots are yet to be decided between the following teams.

Ramya Natarajan and Rishika Sunkara from India are to face the other Indian team of Nidhi Chilmula and Natasha Palha in the next quarterfinal match.

The Chinese team consisting of Qianxin Kong and Jiakang Li must face the formidable duo of Josephine Boualem from France and Andrea Ka from Cambodia.

The final quarterfinal match will be between Sasha Alexander from Australia playing alongside Yuqi Sheng from China and Tamara Curovic from Serbia playing with Angelique Svinos from Australia.
