Sri Lanka defeated Maldives in straight sets to finish a disappointing 13th place at the 19th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship in Philippines.

World ranked 115th Sri Lanka, were hopeful of making into the 9th-12th place semi-finals after defeating world ranked 66th Hong Kong in a thrilling 5 sets.

Sri Lanka notched up their first win at the 19th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship defeating Hong Kong ….

To do so they needed New Zealand to defeat Hong Kong in their meeting. However, Hong Kong comfortably beat New Zealand 25-16, 25-20 & 25-12 and since Sri Lanka had lost to New Zealand 3-1 in the group stage they had to play for the 13th place against Maldives.

The 1st set against Maldives was a close encounter where Sri Lanka prevailed 25-19. However, in the 2nd and 3rd sets Sri Lanka proved to be too powerful for fellow South Asians as they won 25-13 & 25-14.

Chathurika Ranasingha led the assault for the Sri Lankans with her 16 points off 15 kills and a block en-route to their lop-sided victory to end their campaign on a winning note. Consistent scorer Wasana Madumalee also chipped in 12 in denying Maldives of a win in this edition.

Maldives lost to Chinese Taipei, Thailand and Iran in the group stage before failing to salvage any win in the classification matches.
