Indian seeded player Ashwin Vijaragavan took home the Men’s open title of the Colombo Championships after an evenly contested final against Heera Ashiq at the SLTA clay courts last afternoon.

Vijaragavan who is playing his first tournament on Sri Lanka soil had to give his best against the Pakistani Heera Ashiq in the finals where the game extended to three sets to decide the winner. A confident Vijaragavan had it easy against his Pakistani counterpart defeating him 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.

The finals were an easy catch for Ashwin having already defeated the best of the country, Dineshkanthan. The eldest of the Ashiq brothers, Heera Ashiq should be satisfied with himself having come up to the extent of the finals and his overall performance in the tournament.

The girls Under 16 age group saw Anika Seneviratne bagging the title defeating Prabuddhi Perera 6-2, 6-0. The young Anika earlier ended up as the runner up in the Girl’s Under 18 as well being second only to the talented Nethmi Waduge. With this win, Seneviratne will see an elevation in her Under 16 rank which is currently at 8.

Meanwhile Dineshkanthan Thangarajah will contest for the 1st runner up title in the Men’s open in the third place game against Nishangan Nadarajah which is scheduled to be played today.

The games will resume at 1.00 p.m.
