The ASBC Asian Under-22 and Youth Boxing Championships 2025, organised by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) in collaboration with the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) and the International Boxing Association (IBA) started the proceedings in a grand style at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo. The much awaited tournament created history by marking a historic return of elite Asian boxing to Sri Lanka after five decades.

For the opening ceremony, the Interim President of the Asian Boxing Confederation Aziz Kozhambetov, the President of the Sri Lanka Boxing Association Dr. Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara, Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs, Hon. Sunil Kumara Gamage, Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs Eranga Gunasekara and a few other Distinguished guests participated.

Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, French Polynesia, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Vietnam are the 23 participating nations who are in the fray for this championship.

Indonesia’s Jeklin Ndawajepi encountered Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Almuwallad in the U22 bantamweight (54kg) category, which was the tournament opener. At the end of the game, the Saudi boxer got the better of his Indonesian counterpart, and he was through to the quarter-finals.

Kyrgyzstan’s talented boxer Zafarbek Kamilov confronted Kazakhstan’s promising youth player Kenzhe Muratuly. Significantly, both of these players had already achieved medals in previous ASBC Asian Boxing Championships. During this preliminary round game of the U22 bantamweight (54 kg), a fierce fight was displayed as expected. Kamilov went for long-distance punches, and the tactic worked for the 19-year-old Kyrgyz boxer as he outmuscled the Kazakh after a hard-fought battle.

In the third game, Kazakhstan’s Nurislam Kaldybayev battled against Nepal’s ASBC Asian Youth competitor Chhiring Wangdi Sherpa in the preliminary of the men’s U22 lightweight (60kg). From the start Nepal’s boxer came up with aimless wild punches while the opponent used technically correct punches which usually landed on the target. Kaldybayev easily won the first round against Nepali boxer and he finished the encounter after the third standing eight counts.

Vietnam’s prominent ASBC medal winning youth female boxer Ngo Ngoc Linh Chi faced United Arab Emirates’ Jawaher Abdulla Al-Gharib . The Vietnamese caught her opponent with strong and heavy punches in the first round and the game stopped after standing eight counts by limiting the battle for just two minutes.

The bronze medallist in the 2024 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships,Saudi Arabia’s Yara Alamri confronted Kazakhstan’s Gulnar Turapbay in the Women’s 52 kg category. Alamri, who is a talented and nippy player, went down to the dominant performance of Kazakhstan’s Gulner by shattering her next Asian medal dream.

In the final battle of the day, Vietnam’s Song Thi Kim Ngan met with Nepal’s Ghalan Roshni at the U22 flyweight (52kg) and the Vietnamese boxer made a comprehensive win with her swift and technically sound punches.
