AB de Villiers has been added to South Africa’s squad for the third and final T20 international against Sri Lanka at Newlands on Wednesday after scoring a century in domestic cricket on his return from injury.

The 32-year-old scored an unbeaten 134 off 103 balls playing for Northerns against Easterns in a Provincial One-Day Challenge 50-over match in Benoni in what was his first innings since July last year.

De Villiers, the Proteas’ ODI captain, has been sidelined with an elbow injury for the last six months with the superstar batsman also deciding not to play Test cricket for the rest of this year, ruling him out of games in the longest format in New Zealand and England.

The right-hander will be a welcome addition to the T20 squad as the hosts try to wrap up the series after going down by three wickets to the tourists in Johannesburg on Sunday following a win in Centurion on Friday.

De Villiers will use the final T20 match to prepare for the upcoming five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka which kicks off in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
