The Athletics Association of Sri Lanka will conduct the Junior National Athletics Championship from May 16 to 19 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium at Diyagama.

According to sources, the shifting of one of its main annual championships from the Sugathadasa Stadium to Diyagama is to reduce costs.

“The AASL will have to spend more than half a million rupees if it is to hire the Sugathadasa Stadium for the four-day meet,” an official told The Island.

According to one official, the AASL had to look for cost cutting options, because of the heavy costs involved in hosting the third leg of the Asian Grand Prix at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

The forthcoming Junior National Championship will be serve as a trial to pick athletes for the IAAF Youth Championships (to be held in Ukraine from July 10-14), and the Asian Youth Games to be held from August 16 to 24, in China.
