Three participants representing the host country, Sharmal Dissanayake, Anish Wijesinghe and Dineshkanthan Thangarajah, lost in their first round matches at the second week tournament (F2) of the three back-to-back ITF Men’s Futures Tennis Tourneys, now being held at the SLTA Playing Section’s clay courts in Colombo.
Dissanayake, though, stood out as he gave a stiff resistance in his match against Daniel Altmaier from Germany.
Nishangan Nadarajah and Yasitha de Silva from Sri Lanka played in the Men’s Singles Qualifying Draw and lost.
According to the ITF, the Men’s Circuit provides entry level of Professional Tournaments enabling players to eventually reach the higher level tournaments on the ATP World Tour which includes Grand Slams like the Wimbledon.
The ITF Men’s Circuit offers over 600 tournaments across 77 countries. They incorporate two prize-money levels of tournaments named ‘Futures’.
Portugal’s Rui Machado won the Singles title while the Doubles title went to Germany’s Daniel Altmaier and Tom Schonenberg in the F1, ended last week at Gymkhana Club clay courts, also in Colombo.
