Sandeep Wijerathne’s ton puts Sri Sumangala in command on opening day

The 74th Battle of the Golds between Sri Sumangala College, Panadura and Moratu Maha Vidyalaya commenced today at De Soysa Stadium, Moratuwa.   

Having been asked to bat first, Sri Sumangala College produced a commanding batting display to close Day 1 on an imposing 326 for 3, putting themselves in a strong position early in the encounter.  

The backbone of the innings was a superb century from No. 3 batter Sandeep Wijerathne, who compiled a patient and composed 116 off 183 deliveries, striking 11 boundaries. 

Opening batter Vidura Basuru set the tone at the top with a gritty knock of 77 runs off 181 balls, including 7 fours. Adding further impetus was Neksha Iddamalgoda, who remained unbeaten on 84 off just 93 balls. His innings, laced with 6 fours and 3 sixes, injected momentum into the scoring and ensured Sri Sumangala College finished the day on a high. 

For Moratu Maha Vidyalaya, Menuka Kothalawala was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 2 wickets for 62 runs.
