Police vs Navy

Police Sports Club secured their second win of the Maliban Inter-Club Rugby League 25/26 defeating Navy Sports Club 14 (2T 2C) – 10 (1T 1C 1P) in a sloppy disjoint encounter played at Police Park.

Both teams made multiple changes coming into the game as the hosts were in search of their second win while the visitors were chasing their maiden win on the season.

The two teams looked disorganized, lacking quality and on different wave lengths as is took them nearly 20-minutes to register points.

It was the hosts who scored the opener against the run of play as Navy failed to punish the Cops for conceding possession and field position.

Sujan Kodithuwakku was the beneficiary as the winger ran a straight line through the defence of Navy to score from close range.

Prince Chamara added the extras, making it a perfect seven. (Pol 07-00 Navy)

Ten minutes later Navy struck back through their long-standing fullback Thilina Weerasinghe as the visitors got off the mark.

The Police defence was penalised as the fullback had a regulation shot from in-front of the uprights. (Pol 07-03 Navy)

This opened the flood gates inn the dying embers of the first half as Navy’s five-eighth, Isuru Kongahawatta found himself in the ruck, making a quick decision to pick and go as the nippy 10 broke through to score the visitors opening try.

Weerasinghe converted the try, taking the visitors into lemons with a surprise lead.

Half time – Police Sports Club 07 (1T 1C) trail Navy Sports Club 10 (1T 1C 1P)

Police started off the second half on the front foot as the home team scored 8 minutes into the second half through mercurial fullback Prince Chamara.

Chamara had a horrendous game with the boot missing a number of penalties into touch however the one moment was enough to change the narrative of the game for the Cops.

A quick tap, taken quickly saw the fullback crash over, as he converted his own try to take the home side back into the lead. (Pol 14-10 Navy)

The game swung from side to side, as both sided pushed towards getting points but the lacklustre nature of the two sides came to the fore as neither were able to add any further points as Police went on to hold on for a tough victory.
