Trinity College Kandy played some good fast open rugby in the First Half of this Week 4 Fixture of the Dialog Schools Rugby League 2025 to notch up a W against St. Joseph’s College 29-7.

Trinity College were quick to get off the blocks in the game. They played some fast, effective rugby in the opening stages, forcing a penalty and setting up a driving maul off the lineout. No. 8 Manusha Silva touched down for the first try. Shan Althaf missed his first shot at goal.

It didn’t take long before Trinity went over for their second try, once again through a driving maul. Nisith Kumarasinghe was the beneficiary of the forward pack’s solid work. Althaf was on target with the conversion this time.

Trinity were in again—yet again through a driving maul. They sent an early message to their opponents in the coming weeks, making it clear they had a dominant forward pack. Nisith Kumarasinghe went over for his second try. Althaf, however, failed to convert.

Then came the try of the game. Up until this point, the forwards had done most of the work, but this time the Trinity backline executed a fantastic first-phase set move. Some excellent running lines opened up space out wide for Ammar Manzil to score. Unfortunately for Trinity, Althaf’s kick went astray once again.

Possession was fairly shared, but the Josephian defense held strong to prevent Trinity from adding to their tally.

St. Joseph’s needed to strike first in the second half to stay in the contest. After a number of well-constructed phases, captain Beeshma Jayasekara scored from a pick-and-go. Nathan Gunaratne added the extras, bridging the gap.

The game then slowed down, with frequent errors from both sides halting momentum.

Eventually, it was Trinity who broke the deadlock. After a long scoring drought, winger Minula Yaddehige barged his way over for a try. Althaf successfully added the conversion.

St. Joseph’s looked threatening in patches, but with time and energy running out, Trinity held on to close out the game and maintain their unbeaten record.
