Pathum Nissanka’s second century of the series, followed by Dinesh Chandimal’s fluent 93, made it Sri Lanka’s day after bowling Bangladesh out for 247 on day two of the second Test at the SSC Ground.
Bangladesh resumed their first innings on 220/8 after managing just 71 overs on a rain-hit opening day. Taijul Islam and Ebadot Hossain added only 9 runs to the overnight score, with Asitha Fernando trapping the latter plumb in front.

Taijul made a useful contribution of 33 runs before the visitors were bowled out for 247. Debutant Sonal Dinusha claimed his third wicket, striking in his first over of the day. He finished with figures of 3 for 22 in 9.3 overs, while Asitha Fernando picked up 3 for 51. Vishwa Fernando, returning to the side for the first time since December 2024, chipped in with two wickets.
Openers Pathum Nissanka and Lahiru Udara gave Sri Lanka a brisk start, bringing up the team’s fifty in just 8.5 overs. They shared a fluent 83-run opening stand, batting through the morning session without any early setbacks.
Just 2.3 overs after the lunch break, Taijul Islam broke the 88-run partnership by dismissing Udara — who once again fell to the left-arm spinner, this time 10 runs short of a maiden Test fifty.
Nissanka was accompanied by Dinesh Chandimal at the other end after the fall of the opening wicket. The opener soon reached his half-century, while Chandimal got off to a blazing start, smashing a six and three boundaries to race to 24 off just 16 balls. Together, they brought up another century stand for the second wicket, with Chandimal reaching his fifty and Nissanka approaching a well-earned hundred by the tea break.
After the break, Nissanka had a tough period at the crease—particularly when a 149 kph short ball from Nahid Rana struck his helmet. After a patient spell in the nineties, Nissanka finally brought up his fourth Test century, backing up his career-best 187 in Galle.
The duo continued to frustrate the Bangladeshi bowlers with their solid partnership, looking set to bat out the day. But with around 30 minutes remaining, Chandimal threw away his wicket attempting a reverse sweep and was dismissed for 93 off 153 balls.
Prabath Jayasuriya walked in as the nightwatchman and ensured no further damage. Though nine overs were still left in the day, bad light brought day two to a close with Sri Lanka well-placed at 290 for 2 and Nissanka unbeaten on 146.
