The Week 3 of the Dialog Schools Rugby League 2025 commenced on the 20th of June (Friday) with a double header. Trinity College managed to defend their unbeaten tag against a gritty Thurstan outfit by winning 48-19.

Trinity were into it right off the blocks and scored within the first 5 minutes of the game. It was the forwards that set up a maul and rumbled over to score their first try through Shrayan Satheeshkumar. Sadeesha Weerawansa missed his mark with the kick. (Trinity 05 – 00 Thurstan)

It took Trinity only 5 minutes to get over once again. This time some slick offloads and a good scrum half supporting line from Avishka Jayasekara got them the try. Weerawansa got the kick right this time. (Trinity 12 – 00 Thurstan)

Trinity hit once again. The Captain Usman Safraz scored a try after a turnover and quick recycle ball from the breakdown. Weerawansa was bang on once again. (Trinity 19 – 00 Thurstan)

The next try was the pick of the lot. A set move from a center field scrum opened up a huge gap for Sadeesha Weerawansa, who sprinted 50m to score a try. He missed converting his own try. (Trinity 24 – 00 Thurstan)

Moments later Shrayan Satheeshkumar, the Trinity No. 8, made a fantastic break, which put the Thurstan defense in shambles. Trinity recycled swiftly and got the ball out to Kevin Weerakoon who touched down. The kick went astray as Thurstan were yet to find an answer to Trinity’s attack. (Trinity 29 – 00 Thurstan)

It was another wave of Trinity attack that had Thurstan in sixes and sevens. Another try off a center field scrum saw Minula Yaddehige score his first of the day. Weerawansa hit his mark this time around. (Trinity 36 – 00 Thurstan)

It was Thurstan who finally got on the score sheet next. Dasun Nimsara picked and went over to score their first try. Akeesha Kumara knocked over the extras to start Thurstan’s surge. (Trinity 36 – 07 Thurstan)

Thurstan had a majority of possession till Half Time and looked to dominate.

Half Time – Trinity College 36 (6T, 3C) – Thurstan College 07 (1T, 1C)

Soon after the turn around, it was all Thurstan. Phases after phases of attack, they finally got their score through their No. 8, Sithuja Jayathilake who came off the bench. The kick went astray. (Trinity 36 – 12 Thurstan)

Thurstan just kept on coming at Trinity. They switched the point of attack and left the Trinitians without being answered. Once again after a few pick and goes, Sithuja Jayathilake went over for his second. The kick was good from Akeesha Kumara. (Trinity 36 – 19 Thurstan)

Trinity looked to hit back and Minula Yaddehige finally got a try after some slick hands. Weerawansa missed the conversion off the tee. (Trinity 41 – 19 Thurstan)

Minula Yaddehige found his way to the try once again and got over for a hattrick, and a pass from a Thurstanite fell right into his hands. The extras were added by Abdul Malik. (Trinity 48 – 19 Thurstan)

With the clock in the red, Thurstan was not done yet. They continued to look for their 4th try and to secure a bonus point. However, a forward pass in the process halted their chances.

Trinity may have won the game, but Thurstan definitely won the hearts with their gutsy effort. A big performance from them.
