Former Olympian Sriyani Kulawansa to steer the National Selection Committee

Sriyani Kulawansa, the Asian Games gold medalist and Commonwealth Games silver medalist hurdler, has assumed duties as the Chairperson of the National Selection Committee (NSC). The NSC will be responsible for overseeing the selection of national athletes and teams for both local and international competitions.

The veteran athlete, a proud product of Ibbagamuwa Central College, Kurunegala, has brought numerous international accolades to Sri Lanka. During the 1996 Olympic Games held in the USA, she advanced to the quarter-finals of the Women’s 100m Hurdles event, recording her personal best time of 12.91 seconds—an unbroken Sri Lankan national record to this day. Kulawansa represented Sri Lanka at the Olympic Games in 1992, 1996, and 2000. 

She is also a former member of the National Sports Council and currently serves as the President of the Sri Lanka Olympians Association. 

Major General Ravi Pathiravithana, Security Forces Commander – East, has been appointed as the Secretary of the National Selection Committee. During his school years, he represented Ananda College in cricket in the late 1980s. 

Additionally, Major Rajitha Samaraseka has been appointed as the Coordination Officer of the National Selection Committee.

  • Kamal Gamlath – Former national badminton player and coach 
  • Ruwan Pradeep Perera – Former national pole vault champion and Sri Lankan record holder in the late 1990s 
  • Jayamini Elleperuma – Former Olympian (400m at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics), Sri Lankan record holder for 200m (1987–1992) and 400m (1989–1998) 
  • Suresh Subramaniam – President of the National Olympic Committee 
  • Anuradha Illeperuma – Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Youth and Sports 

The newly appointed committee members received their official letters of appointment during a brief ceremony held at the Ministry of Sports. The event was held under the patronage of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage, and the Deputy Minister, Olympian Sugath Thilakarathna.
