Sri Lanka’s batters falter once again in Pakistan

Sri Lanka suffered another heavy loss in the 2nd T20I against Pakistan, losing by 7 wickets and thereby surrendering the series 2-0 with a game to spare.

Once again Sri Lanka had the hosts under the pump in the chase at 34/3 in the 8th over, but just did not have enough runs on the board to complete the job in Karachi.

Ayesha Naseem was impressive for the hosts, taking her time to get set, but then showing some power in her batting with some big hits as the target got closer. Naseem’s 45* came in an unbeaten 70-run match-winning partnership alongside skipper Bismah Maroof, who made 22* off 29.

Sri Lanka’s fielding looked good in patches, the ground fielding in particular seems to have improved since their last assignment, with Nilakshi de Silva taking a phenomenal leaping catch to dismiss Gull Feroza. However, a couple catches and a stumping went down too, and those were opportunities the visitors just could not afford to give, with just 102 on the board.

Earlier in the day, skipper Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and elected to bat once again, on a slow turner, but fell to Anam Amin for the 2nd time this series, caught in the deep.

Sri Lanka shuffled around the batting order, with Oshadi Ranasinghe coming in at 3 and vice-captain Harshitha Samarawickra dropping down to No.5 but it made little difference as the visitors struggled to even rotate strike, let alone find the boundary; Sri Lanka’s 102 included just seven 4s and 0 sixes.

Hasini Perera’s 35 off 51 was the top scorer for Sri Lanka, while Nilakshi de Silva struck 21 off 29.

The third and final T20I will be on the 28th of May at the same venue.
