87th ABA boxing meet from October 27

The 87th Clifford Cup Boxing Championship organized by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (ABA) will begin at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo.

The meet will commence on the 27 October and the finals will be held on 31 October from 3.00 p.m. onwards.

Male and female boxers between the ages of 19-40 years will face elimination bouts commencing from 27 October, to bring to light Sri Lanka’s future prospects at national level.

The general weigh-in preceded by the medical examination for male and female boxers will be held on 27 October from 7.00 to 9.00 a.m. at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

All female boxers are expected to submit a non–pregnancy declaration at the general weigh-in. The medical examination and weigh-in on 28–31 October for all male and female boxers will be held from 8.00 to 9.00 a.m. at the same venue.

The draw will take place at 10.00 a.m. on 27October under the ABA approved system.

As this is a team championship, every club should enter a minimum of 4 boxers for the male and female weight categories separately, and those boxers should fulfill all eligibility requirements of this meet.

M.Y.M Dilshan, armed with experience from Glasgow, is ready to battle again at the Clifford Cup this year. He also took part in the 17th Asian Games, which was recently concluded in Korea.

Shiromali Weerarathne and Erandhi Silva, who took part in the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, will also compete in the women’s category representing their respective clubs and weight categories.

P. D. Suresh Rupasinghe, the Layton Cup best boxer of 2014 will not be participating at the Clifford Cup due to an injury sustained while training.

All winners, runners-up and semi-finalists will receive medals and certificates. The best male and female boxers will receive special awards.

The Champion Club will be awarded the Clifford Cup Challenge Trophy based on the number of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals won.
