84 matches wrap up Day 1 of Blue and Gold Hockey 7s

Blue & Gold Hockey sevens, recognized as the most attention gained tournament in the Schools Hockey calendar, kicked off on the 12th of October 2013 with the participation of over fifty (50) schools.

Draw from all over the Island Royal College Hockey Club (RCHC) has conducted the tournament for the past decade. Singer, Sri Lanka has been the sponsor from the very inception. Organized for the 11th consecutive year the Blue Gold’s kicked off the first day in three parallel grounds within Royal College premises.

The preliminary rounds were taking place in 16 sub divisions; 8 division for boys teams and 8 for the girl’s. With average 4 teams in each division in the case of boys’ and 3 in girls’ the first day wrapped up with 84 matches taking place. The winners of each category were qualified for the Cup category for the finals. The runners up and the second runners up formed Bowl and Plate categories.

Summing up on the performances on the first day, being the defending champions, in search of their champions title once again, Royal College went on to win in group A against St. Joseph College, Colombo by 2-0 (Imadh-1, Shaheer-1), Sri Sumangala College, Panadura by 1-0 (Imadh-1)and much fancied Kingswood College, Kandy by 3-0 (Shalitha Jayawardene 1, Shaheer 1, Malith 1). Royal is to take over Price of Wales, Moratuwa in the pre-quarter final.

In the girl’s category, defending champions Pushpadana Girls College Kandy, which drew its only group match against Southlands College, Galle, edged up to become the group champions through winning penalty strokes by 3-1. They will play against their fellow school from Kandy, St. Anthony’s College in their pre-quarter finals.
