The official press conference for the 67th Battle of the Golds cricket encounter between Prince of Wales’ College, Moratuwa and St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa was held yesterday at the Hotel Janaki in Colombo.

This year’s encounter is organized by a joint committee headed by Prince of Wales, who proudly announced that Ceylon Cold Stores has come aboard as the main sponsor for the encounter.

Out of the 66 matches that have been played so far, the Cambrians have recorded six wins while the Sebastianites have registered three victories. The rest of the matches have ended in draws. Prince of Wales last won in 1977 under Premlal Fernando while St. Sebastian’s regained the shield in 2011 when they were led by Sanith De Mel.

Speaking to the Principal of Prince of Wales’, Mr. Kusala Fernando, he stated “the encounter between these two schools is not just an occasion for the students of the schools but for the people of Moratuwa”. He went on to say “I am glad that old boys of the school have come forward to support us and we hope for the unconditional support in the future as well”.

ThePapare.com also got a chance to speak to the Principal of St. Sebastian’s Rev. Fr. Ranjith Andradi. We asked him what it is like to be tied up with Prince of Wales; “we could not have asked for a better rivalry, especially a school that shares the same passion for the sport and the education of children”.

This year’s Battle of the Golds will be played at the De Soyza Grounds, Moratuwa on the 10th and 11th of March followed by the 32nd limited-overs encounter on 12th March.
