Maiden title for Fathoum while Ravindu claims his 7th

Sri Lanka’s most well-known Squash player Ravindu Laksiri held onto his 7th consecutive Senior National title while Fathoum Issadeen claimed her Maiden title at the 39th Senior National Squash Championship 2019 (Yesterday) at the Air Force Squash Courts, Rathmalana.

The two South Asian Games contenders, Ravindu Laksiri and Fathoum Issadeen proved their talent once again to stamp their seal on top of the two events.

Defending Champion and the 7th consecutive Senior National title winner faced his doubles partner, school- mate and the South Asian team-mate Shamil Wakeel in the Men’s final. The defending champion beat Shamil Wakkel with a 3-0 scoreline, with the set scores reading 11/9, 11/3, 11/5. Shamil Wakeel managed to put up a good battle against his doubles partner while Gihan Suwaris defeated Mohomed Hakeem in the 3rd-4th playoff.

The Women’s final was a thriller with the two leading squash players in the local arena going neck and neck in a hard-fought grand finale. Fathoum Issadeen and Mihiliya Methsarani paired up to win bronze at the South Asian Games bronze medals. The standard of play in the final was very exciting as the first set was won by Fathoum 11/9 and the second set was won by Mihiliya 9/11. However, the third set was won by Fathoum 11/7. Mihiliya tried to keep up the momentum in the game however, Fathoum managed to break play, winning the fourth set 11/5 to claim her maiden title. Meanwhile, Kasuni Gunawarddana defeated Sameera Deen in the 3rd-4th playoff.
