Gunathilaka stars with the ball in Dambulla win

Team Dambulla had a couple of handy wrist spinners up their sleeve, but it was Danushka Gunathilaka’s finger spin that yielded 4/21 to guide them to their 2nd win in as many games over Team Galle.

It was day two of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Super T20 Provincial Tournament  as Dambulla won the toss and elected to bat first under lights, after Colombo beat Kandy in a thriller of a game which was decided after a super over at the same venue.

Team Dambulla had an early set back losing Ramith Rambukwella and Gunathilaka in quick succession before a century stand between Sadeera Samarawickrama and Ashan Priyanjan got them back on track.

While Samarawickrama departed for 48, Priyanjan made another strong case with a half century – following his century on the opening day – to guide Dambulla to a competitive 179/6.

Hasitha Boyagoda(29*) and Isuru Udana(25) added much needed impetus to the latter part of the Dambulla innings while Dhananjaya de Silva who was surprisingly used only for 2 overs, captured 2/11 for Team Galle.

Team Dambulla were all over Galle from the word go as they crashed to just 84 all-out to crash to their second defeat in as many days.

Dambulla who boasted the likes of the mysterious Lakshan Sandakan and Wanidu Hasaranga in their spin attack, surprised themselves to a certain extent through Gunathilaka. He picked up the first four of the five wickets to fall as he killed the Galle run chase in the power play.

Sandakan and Hasaranga only made life difficult for the Galle batsmen who seemed all at sea, before they eventually lost by a whopping 95 runs to sit last on the points table.

Hasaranga also joined the party using his wrong’uns to good affect as he ended with top figures of 3/11 in 3.5 overs.

At the end of the Colombo leg of the tournament (2 games each for all teams), Colombo and Dambulla are in strong positions with two out of two win while Kandy and Galle are yet to register victories.
