Day two of the Junior Nationals Tennis championships saw the top seeds in the junior age categories making their way into the courts of SLTA to make their opening statement.
The opening rounds for the Under 18 title which is the top draw title on offer in the Junior Nationals saw progress on day two. Whilst the qualifiers for the under 16 & under 14 continued for the second day running, attention was centered to the under 18 games.
The first draw in the under 18 game was Sheal Karunaratna taking on Udayachandra Srinath in a round 1 game. Sheal Karunaratna got his qualification to the round two with ease winning the game 6-4,7-5 and will face top seed B. Suren this evening.
Pravin Steele will face seeding player Avindra Perera in his under 18 second round game after he defeated Nuwantha Dissanayaka 2-6,6-2,7-5. Top seeded player Chehan Fernando abused his round one competitor to get through to the second roound, winning it 6-1,6-0. Fernando will be opting to carry on his success to the next round when he faces Isuru Wijerathne. Peterite Inthujan Selvaratnarajah also got his ticket to round 2 and will be matched up with #6 seed Amanda Gunawardena.
Alongside the Boys was the Girls title that savored a exciting flair to the day. The likes of Medira Samarasinghe, Nethmi Waduge & Thisuri Molligoda were missed out on the action on the first day as they got themselves a bye to the next round.
The Visakhian Thisuri Molligoda will be meeting Janali Manamperi in her first game which is scheduled for the afternoon and Medhira Samarasinghe will see Pamoda Jayasekara in her first game. Jayasekara got her way in to the second round defeating Rukshana Abdeen 6-4,5-7,7-5. Disappointingly the young Supeshala Colombathanthri who took the spotlight in the Colombo Championships didn’t make it to the second round as she had to face defeat to Sethara Ambawatte in the first game.
Play will resume at 8.30 a.m. with the under 10,under 16 & under 18 singles for both boys & girls.
