Ananda, Maris Stella clash evenly poised

Ananda College, Colombo and Maris Stella College, Negombo shared honours in their Singer-cup division I two-day knock-out tournament which began today at Surrey Village grounds.

Having been asked to bat first Ananda College posted a formidable 236 all out inside 61 overs. Right handed Kamesh Nirmal stroked 60 valuable runs and he was ably supported by Sri Lankan youth cap Sammu Ashan who made a brisk half-ton to guide the Anandians to a respectable total. Four front line bowlers bagged two wickets a piece for the lads from Negombo to restrict the strong Ananda batting outfit.

In reply Maris Stella College fought back hard to make 131 for 3 at stumps as they were eager to chase down the target. Roshen Fernando made a solid 40, while Kevin Perera anchored the innings with an unbeaten 40 at close of play.

Match will continue tomorrow for day two.

 Dharmasoka College vs Thurstan College

Dharmasoka College winning the toss opted to bat first and they lost wickets at regular intervals. Right handed Kasun Maduranga was the lone ranger for the Sokians in their first innings scoring 78 runs to steer them to a reasonable 186 in 76.2 overs in their Singer- Cup two day knock-out quarter-finals which started today at Kadirana grounds.

Thushal Madushanka was superb with ball for the Thurstanites as he removed the top order of Dharmasoka with his crafty off-spin and he was accompanied by left-arm spinner Sandaru Dias as he bagged 3 scalps.

Thurstan College holds the upper hand as they were 21 for none at close of play.
