The Liverpool striker was injured in training on Wednesday but has undergone a successful procedure on the external meniscus in his left knee and will play some part in Brazil
Luis Suarez will be fit for the World Cup after having successful knee surgery on Thursday afternoon, according to the Uruguayan Football Association.
The Liverpool striker felt some discomfort in his knee during a training session on Wednesday and was scheduled for surgery shortly after.
The Uruguayan FA has since confirmed the procedure was a success in a statement and expect him to play a part in Brazil, where they face England, Italy and Costa Rica in Group D.
The statement reads: “The Uruguayan FA announces that yesterday (Wednesday, May 21), Luis Suarez, after the normal warming-up exercises, suffered intense pain on his left knee when he was doing some work with the ball. It was diagnosed as ‘suffering on his external meniscus, stable and with no draining’.
“A scan was performed and the partial injury on his external meniscus was confirmed.
“This morning, Luis Suarez had arthroscopic surgery on a partial meniscus resection at the Medica Uruguayan clinic. There were no other injuries on his knee.
“He is not ruled out for the World Cup in Brazil.
“It is worth pointing out that the player received a direct knock to his left knee during Liverpool’s last Premier League match (v Newcastle) on May 11. He rested after that match and the pain eased since the league was over.”
