Duo give Wheel Chair Tennis a Sri Lankan touch

The 4th consecutive NEC International Open Wheelchair Tennis Tournament was concluded yesterday making D. M. Gamini the winner of the finals. D. M. Gamini beat the more fancied Upali Rajakaruna who ranked 69th on the world ranking.

D.M. Gamini brought honor to Sri Lanka by defeating Henry De Cure (6/1, 6/0) representing Australia in the semi finals while Raja a top class player, clinched the Sri Lankan Open title last week.

The combination of Gamini-Raja gave a splendid performance on the main draw which was the doubles to defeat Australian duo Henry De Cure and Keegan Oh Chee. (7/5, 6/1). The semi -finals of the men’s doubles took place between the Gamini- Raja combo and K.M.S.P. Perera-R.L.S Ranaweera which the former overcame easily (6/4, 6/0).

Meanwhile W.P.J.Wijesiri defeated K.A.Dharmakeerthi for a score of 7/5, 6/2 in the main draw singles consolation final while W.H.S. Pushpakumara who conquered Pradeep Kumara won the second draw singles (6/1, 6/2). The amalgamation of L.D.S. Liyanage and K.G.M. Pradeep Kumara gave a splendid perdormance to beat A.M.D. Jayarathne and K.M. Karunarathne in the second draw doubles (6/4, 7/5)

Players from Australia and India participated on the mega event sponsored by Bank of Ceylon and DIMO on 25, 26, and 27.
