The 101st edition of the National Tennis Championship concluded last evening with an awards ceremony to recognize the best players of the tournament. The chief guest for the evening was the Minister of Sports Dayasiri Jayasekara, who shared his thoughts about the importance of developing outstation tennis and most interestingly spoke about a talent identification program he plans on implementing to identify players with great potential to play for the 2020 Olympics.

Janali Manamperi was recognised as the winner of the under 16 girls’ singles title as well as the winner of the doubles title along with Anya Gunawardana whilst Vibuda Wijebandara won the boys’ Under 16 singles title as well as the doubles title along with Vinuja Wijebandara.

 Senior & Junior Nationals Tennis Tournament 2016 – Prize Giving 

The senior under 18 girls’ singles title was won by Medhira Samarasinghe and the boys’ by Avindra Perera. The girls’ under 18 doubles title was won once again by Anya Gunawardana and Janali Manamperi and the boys’ title was won by Kavindu Diluka and Archana Lokuge.

Moving on to the open events, the winning team of the mixed doubles title was Thangarajah Dineshkanthan and Anika Seneviratne. The girls’ doubles title was won by Amritha Muttiah and Medhira Samarasinghe whilst Thisuri Molligoda won the girls’ singles title. The Men’s singles title was won by Sharmal Dissanayake and the doubles title was won by Sankha Athukorala and Yasith De Silva.
