After a lengthy lapse following the tragic Easter Sunday Attacks, basketball is eyeing its maiden tournament to get the ball rolling back across the court. The sport will be looking to bring back the action with the U17 ‘A’ Division All Island Boys’ Basketball Championship 2019.

Basketball in Sri Lanka was moving towards a phenomenal year after introducing the first semi-professional basketball league in the history of the sport. However, as the unfortunate events unfolded on Easter Sunday, the calendar stood still until the country resumed its normal activities.

Hence, the U17 ‘A’ Division Boys’ All Island Basketball Championship will be the spark in getting the sport back on track.

Participating Teams

The tournament will tip-off on the 21st of June and will go on till the 24th June. The preliminary stages will operate in multiple venues. The semi-finals and finals will be played in St. Joseph`s College – Colombo 10.  27 schools will compete in 8 groups for the title. This tournament will be a testing ground for all schools. Almost all the schools participating have had lapses in their practice sessions due to recent security concerns.

  • Group A and C Preliminary Rounds – St. Peter`s College – Colombo.
  • Group B Preliminary Rounds – Lyceum International School – Wattala.
  • Group D Preliminary Rounds – Royal College – Colombo
  • Group E and H Preliminary Rounds – S. Thomas` College – Mount Lavinia.
  • Group F Preliminary Rounds – St. Joseph`s College – Colombo 10.
  • Group G Preliminary Rounds – St. Joseph`s College – Wattala

The initial stages of the tournament will go on till the morning of 22nd of June while the knock-out stages of the tournament will begin in the evening of 22nd June with the pre-quarter finals.

Buddhin Amarasinghe, Tournament Secretary, Sri Lanka Schools Basketball Association, speaking with ThePapare.com said, “We kindly request all the players and spectators to adhere with the security measures of the respective schools. There will be less spectators allowed inside the playing venues so kindly request everybody to stay calm and follow the security protocols when entering the venues”.
