Gateway Colombo drown out British School

Gateway College Colombo took on the British School in Colombo in the Group B segment of the Girls’ category of the Inter-International Basketball Tournament 2016.

The girls from British School started strong to secure a slim 2-6 lead early on in the first quarter. On the other hand, Gateway College were rather unsettled, as they took a while to get things going for their side. However, backed by a gutsy defensive outfit and with Yischelle Foenander leading the scoring, Gateway managed to gain the upper hand in the first quarter. British School failed to convert a number of three point attempts by the player left open at the arc and were made to pay as their opponents scored on the counter attack. Gateway led the first quarter 17-12.

The crowd witnessed neck and neck play in the second period. Each team had their share of good fortun and bad luck in this quarter. Gateway managed to score by working the ball around and driving hard at the basket. British, on the other hand, converted points on free throws granted.

When the game recommenced after lemons, the defensive efforts of both teams improved drastically. British School, switching to a full court press, were especially successful in cutting off their opponents passes. It was a low scoring quarter with Gateway scoring only 4 points in reply to 7 by British. However, Gateway still led 35-30.

Gateway showcased stellar play in the last quarter. British School had already started to feel the wear and tear of the game, and their opponents were making them pay. Gateway capitalized on defensive rebounds and scored on the fast break. Signs of a comeback by British School were indeed too late, and Gateway sealed the win as the game clock died out.

The Lyceum showdown: Nugegoda takes on Pandura

In today’s second match, Lyceum International School, Nugegoda took on Lyceum International School, Panadura in a low scoring Group B fixture of the Girls’ category of the Inter-International Basketball Tournament 2016.

Lyceum Nugegoda gained possession off the jump ball, but failed to convert their first layup attempt at the basket. However, they still managed to draw first blood, with Rashmi Perera scoring a quick two points for her team. Lyceum Nugegoda walked out of the first period with a 9-5 lead.

Lyceum Nugegoda opted for a man-to-man defense strategy in the second period. This proved difficult for the girls from Pandura, as many of their attempts to drive in were cut off. They were restricted to three points in the second quarter.

Lyceum Panadura went on to find their way into the game, as they managed more shots at

the basket. However, their efforts were thwarted as Lyceum Nugegoda dominated the rest of the match. This fixture was all in all a low scoring tussle for the basketball, in which the girls from Nugegoda emerged victorious.
