Sri Lanka Open Chess Championship to be held in Kurunegala

Organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, this championship will be an open chess event with international rating which will start off on the 6th of August and will go on till the 11th of August. Plans have been finalized to host the event at the Young Men’s Buddhist Association hall in Kurunegala.

This prestigious event which was initiated in 1972, has seen continuation ever since and passed an important milestone in its journey in 2006 as the championship saw itself being made internationally rated.

The total bounty of Rs. 400,000/- will be placed on the championship to be up for grabs for players who emerge on top of 14 respective categories which will adjudge players as:

  1. Champion
  2. Best Girls’ Player
  3. Best Unrated Player
  4. Best Under 15 Boys’ Player
  5. Best Under 15 Girls’ Player
  6. Best Under 12 Boys’ Player
  7. Best Under 12 Girls’ Player
  8. Best under 10 Boys’ Player
  9. Best Under 10 Girls’ Player
  10. Best Under 8 Boys’ Player
  11. Best Under 8 Girls’ Player
  12. Best Player of Rating Category 1700-1900
  13. Best Player Rating Category 1500-1700 and
  14. Best Player Rating Category Less Than 1500.

Narahenpitiya and Kaushika De Silva will be the players to keep an eye on as they will be fresh on form with the duo emerging on the top most ranks respectively at the concluded 6th Mercantile / Government Services International Rating Chess Championship.

All in all this championship will be a great experience and exposure for unrated and budding players to make their mark in the black and white checked arena.
