Sri Lanka defeats strong Japan

Sri Lanka defeated Japan in their first match in the Men’s category of the Asian U19 Beach Volleyball Championships 2018 (Asian Zone) in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand.

The double-gender, three-day competition attracted a total of 37 teams including 23 men’s teams to vie for the top honours and quotas on offer for the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina and the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships in China later this year.

The Men’s team was in Pool F alongside Japan and Philippines. In a thrilling 1st set Japan narrowly piped Sri Lanka 20-22 but Sri Lanka learnt from their mistakes to win the 2nd set 21-16 and take the match into a decider. In the 3rd set, Mahela Indeewara and Kavindu Malinda had a comfortable 15-6 win.

In the Women’s category, Sri Lanka faced top seed Thailand in Pool A. Sri Lanka gave a good fight but lost 21-17 & 21-14.
