After the conclusion of the illustrious first round action from the Singer Schools Rugby League, the top four of the two groups have been finalised after seven long weeks of action.

SCHOOLS RUGBY LEAGUE 2017

The inclusion of D. S. Senanayake College added an extra week for the teams in the Group IA segment while the Group IB teams finished their share of games of the first round fortnight back.

This weekend’s clashes were a decider for the final two positions in the Group IA segment. The questions were for  St. Anthony’s College where the Antonians had to win their encounter against Royal to get through to the second round provided that St. Peter’s lost to Dharmaraja. It was, however, a sad tale for the fighting Antonians from Katugastota who lost to Royal 48-35.

SLSRFA reveals how the Schools League will work out

The inclusion of the 13th team in the top tier of the Singer Schools Rugby League has caused some confusion among the rugby…

The defending champions Isipathana finished in the top spot of their respective group with only one loss that came against St. Peter’s. Royal comes in second on points average with a single loss to Isipathana College.

After a depleted start, St. Joseph’s College peaked at the right time nearing the second round as they take the third place after their 12-try annihilation against D. S. Senanayake in the final week.

The Peterites should be quite delighted to note that they will be progressing forward to round 2 despite their disappointing fixture against Dharmaraja where the Rajans racked in a total of 5 tries to cruise past the Bambalapitiya lads.

The end of Round 1 Points table prior to adjustment of Group IA will be as follows:

Exciting contest for the Plate title

Three teams from the Group IA and two teams from Group IB will be demoted to the Plate title after their disappointing performance. Dharmaraja College, St. Anthony’s College & D. S. Senanayake College will be the teams going to the Plate title from Group IA. The teams from Group IB will be Science College and Prince of Wales.

The Antonian season was a letdown despite showing tremendous potential and will have a chance at redemption with a possible Plate title. Science College, Mount Lavinia will make to the Plate division for the first time since entering the top league in 2011.

Dharmaraja’s win against St. Peter’s should lift their spirits while it will be decision time for the two teams who go win-less in the first round; D. S. Senanayake College and Prince of Wales. Their existence in the first division will rely on the next four weeks of play.

The second round in both Cup and Plate will commence on the 29th of April. The adjustments on the tries and the finalized fixtures will be released later in the week.
