Schools Rugby League: Much-awaited second round is upon us

2091

The much-anticipated second round of the schools’ rugby is just three sleeps away from returning following a break of 8-weeks. What does the first week of round two have in store for us? Let’s find out.

1st June – S. Thomas’ College vs Isipathana College at Mount Lavinia at 4pm.

Isipathana College will be the first team to make their way down to the home of the Thomians as the two sides kickoff round two as one of three matches played at the same time on the 1st of June.

Having not beaten the visitors in 9-years, the Thomians will surely be seeking to put that record right as they prepare to take on the Green Machine who has only tasted defeat once this season.

Form of the first round will not affect either team, having had an extended lay-off due to security concerns in the country.

Both teams will no doubt be seeking to begin the second round on a high, however, having said that, neither will give an inch as the two sides meet.

The Green Machine will no doubt aim to run around the Thomians but playing at home will no doubt spur the Thomians on as they bid to break a 9-year winless run against Isipathana College.

1st June – St. Peter’s College vs Science College at St. Peter’s grounds Bambalapitiya at 4pm.

Two sides known for their running game meet in what promises to be an exhilarating encounter.

St. Peter’s College managed to remain unbeaten following their first week loss at the hands of S. Thomas’ College, even going on to defeat defending champions Royal College.

The moral boosting victory at the end of the first round no doubt made the Peterites contenders for the title, however, the extended break came at the wrong time if you’re a St. Peter’s player.

Science College on the other hand will be delighted to remain in the cup segment, after a year in the lower league. Famous for their upsets, the lads from Science will be eyeing a massive scalp as they kick off the second round.

These two teams have played out some thrilling games over the past year taking this rivalry between the two sides to new heights.

St. Peter’s have shown their capabilities of controlling the game with possession and forwards play, however, the manner in which their back-line copes up with pressure will be one to watch out for.

1st June – Trinity College vs Royal College (1st leg of the Bradby Shield) at Pallekale at 4pm

Undoubtedly the fixture of the week, playing out against each other for the 75th year, this game takes the rivalry between the two teams to new heights.

A fixture like none other. It will see the lads from both teams wear their hearts on their sleeves as they step out, putting their body on the line, to battle it out for supremacy.

Royal College will surely have their work cut out, having to travel up to Kandy in the first leg, however, this is an encounter which brings the best out of a school boy rugby player.

Trinity College will bring about the flair they are known for, while the Royalists play out a vastly contrasting game to their hosts. Famous for their forwards play, Royal College will have to be at their best if they are to topple a Trinity outfit branded for their Razzle-Dazzle.

Neither team will be favourites after an extended break away from the paddock, however, the team to hang in there and to control proceedings will surely have a chance to gain an early advantage ahead of the second leg down at the Complex.
