Schools rugby : Singer 7s Day 01

The school rugby season kicked off with singer rugby 7’s at the Royal complex today. 29 school competed this time and at the end of first day 24 teams qualified to the knock out stages. It’s all set up for 2nd day of good competitive rugby amongst the best rugby playing schools in the island.

 

These 29 times teams were divided into 8 groups. 

Group A- Isipathana College, Prince of Wales, Royal College Panadura 

Group B- St Joesph’s College, St Anthony’s College, St Sylvester’s College, Bandaranayka MV

Group C- Wesley College, Darmaraja College, Maliyadewa College, Moratuwa MV

Group D- St Thomas’s College, Ananda College, Lalith Athulathmudali College, Darmapala MV

Group E- Kingswood College, DS Senanayake College, St Benedict’s College, Lumbini College

Group F- St Peter’s College, Zahira College, Thurstan College, St Thomas’s College Matale, 

Group G- Science College, Vidyartha College, Piliyandala Central 

Group H- Trinity College, Mahanama College, Nalanda College 

 

 

 

Group A :defending champions Isipathana College dominated in their group stage matches. They assured themselves a spot in the cup quarter finals while Prince of Wales found their way to the bowl quarter finals. Isipathana looked threatening and they are surely among the favorites to take home the cup this time as well. With National colours-men in their side they are the team to beat in this years tournament.

Group B: St Joesph’s College found their way to the Cup quarters after beating St Anthony’s who manage to ultimately find a place in the bowl quarter-finals. The two big schools, St Joesph’s and St Anthony’s fought hard for a place in the cup quarters but the boys from Darley road came on top at the end. 

Group C : Dharmaraja College came on top and qualified to the cup quarter finals while Wesley College secured a place in the Bowl quarters.

Group D :S Thomas’s College dominated proceedings with some sound performances while Lalith Athulathmudali College secured a spot in the bowl quarters. The boys from Mount Lavinia made their presence felt and they clearly gave a strong impression to the other teams.

Group E was the most competitive among all the groups. Two schools, one with a great history in rugby and the other making their mark in the rugby arena clashed for a spot in the Cup knockouts. It was Kingswood College and DS Senanayake College who competed for a spot in the quarters. After a really tight match DS Senanayake College came on top and secured their place in the quarter-finals. 

Group F:  St. Peter’s stormed their way to the Cup quarter finals with only conceding 7 points against them while scoring 90 points in their three matches. Under the captaincy of Kevin Dixon this team looked strong and determined to take the cup home this year. Thurstan College managed to find a place in the Bowl quarters.
