Joes v Kingswood. U19 Div I

A brilliant first half saw St. Joseph’s College record a comprehensive 2-0 win over Kingswood College in the All Island U19 Division I Championship group A encounter at the Kingswood College grounds.

In a reverse performance of what transpired a few days back, St. Joseph’s College produced a dominant first half but unlike against St.Benedict’s they were unable to replicate the same in the second half.

The match kicked off later than the scheduled kick-off time amidst the forecasted rain. Both teams looked to settle down from the start of play; however it was the Joes who had the calmer head in the first 10 minutes of the game.

In the 12th minute St. Joseph’s got the lead through an own goal; the Kingswood centre back N.Buddika was deemed to be the culprit of the own goal after he headed the ball neatly over his own goalkeeper’s head and into the back of the net.

Two minutes later the Joes came attacking again this time they scored through Jason Fernando who calmly chipped over the keeper only for him to be deemed off side.

The match then built pace where the visitors showed signs of scoring again as they linked up nicely.

Finally on the brink of half time the St. Joseph’s winger Asela Madushan got a through ball from Sachintha Maduranga which he finished with ease beating the keeper. In the first half St. Joseph’s outclassed the opposition with their link up play creating chances.

The second half started amidst torrid rain.

It was Kingswood’s half as they outclassed the St. Joseph’s team, but unlike the Josephians in the first half, they were unable to score a single goal.

Sachintha Maduranga, who played well throughout the match, was denied twice by the crossbar in both halves and also assisted the goal scored by Asela Madushan.

Kingswood tried their best with soaring attack after attack through their midfielders and came very close on the brink of full time whistle when they got a corner but the rushing striker missed an open goal sending the ball over the cross bar.

Kingswood lost the match due to their poor finishing and first half performance but St. Joseph’s carry on their unbeaten streak with another good outing.
