Rain ruins second day’s play of Super Provincial games

The two 4-day pink ball matches of the Super Provincial four day cricket tournament were badly affected by the prevailing rainy conditions at Dambulla and Hambanthota as day two of the matches concluded without any real action.    

 Kandy vs Colombo

Due to the rainy conditions at Hambanthota, the match between Kandy and Colombo was completely washed out. Match was scheduled to begin at 2.00 pm but the heavy rain interrupted the match and umpires had to call off the day without a single ball being bowled.

Dambulla vs Galle

Only 2.4 overs were bowled in the other encounter between Dambulla and Galle as it was also interrupted by rain. Match was scheduled to begin at 2.00 pm but the pouring rain at Dambulla did not allow the match to commence until 7.00 pm.

After inspecting the ground conditions, umpires decided to commence the match as Galle team’s overnight batsman Madawa Waranapura and Upul Tharanga resumed the innings at 38 runs for 2 wickets. They added another 12 runs to the scoreboard within 2.4 overs before rain interrupted again for the match which saw umpires calling stumps for day two.
