Mahela Jayawardene set to coach Southern Brave in The Hundred

Former Sri Lanka Captain Mahela Jayawardene is in contention to coach Southern Brave in the new professional 100-ball cricket league run by the England and Wales Cricket Board which is set to commence in July 2020.

The league, called The Hundred, will consist of eight city-based franchise teams, each of which will field both a men’s and women’s team. It is intended to run alongside the county-based Natwest t20 Blast for men and supersede the Women’s Super League.

Southern Brave is the team based at Ageas Bowl, Southampton and other teams in this league are Manchester Originals based at Old Trafford, Manchester Leeds Superchargers based at Headingley, Leeds Birmingham Phoenix based at Edgbaston, Birmingham Trent Rockets based at Trent Bridge, Nottingham Welsh Fire based at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff London Spirit based at Lord’s and London Oval Greats based at The Oval, London.

Jayawardene has made a name for himself with the way he coached the Mumbai Indians at the IPL, winning two titles in 3 years. He is also coach of the Khulna Titans franchise which features in the Bangladesh Premier League.

According to ESPNCricinfo, former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond is likely to be Jayawardene’s assistant. Bond also works with Jayawardene at Mumbai Indians. The report further claimed that while the deals are not finalised yet, the talks are at an advanced stage. Both Jayawardene and Bond look set to be plying their trade in England in the coming days and the salary of each coach is believed to be £65,000.
