St Peter’s College defeated the newcomers D.S.Senanayake College 36 points to 05 in their Singer Schools League encounter worked off at Welisara this evening. At half time it was 17 points to nil in favour of the Bamba Brigade.

The game was played under overcast conditions at Welisara. Peterite coach Colin Denish made a few changes to the starting line too after the shocking defeat against Royal College last week. The Peterites dominated with possession in the first half but the DS defence was up to their task as they didn’t allow the Peterites to score in the first 20 minutes of the game. St Peter’s opened their scoring through a penalty from Stephan Sivaraj as he bisected the uprights with ease. (DSSC 00-03 SPC)

In the first half DS had opportunities to score but slippery hands and brilliant defending from St.Peter’s didn’t allow them to score a single point. Bulky prop Nikhil Yapa was the first to touch down for the Peterites. Sivaraj added the easy extras. (DSSC 00-10 SPC)

In the dying stages of the first half skipper Diyath Fernando went over for the Peterites to increase their lead. The Peterite forwards were the architects of this try as they attacked at the DS try line for more than 10 phases before spreading it wide to the skipper. Sivaraj was spot on with his kick. Second half commenced with a try from the Peterites as the tall winger Shehan Thiwanka went over near the right corner flag. St Peter’s showed some decent improvement in their handling skills and basic rugby was played by working the ball to the corner by the backs allowing Thiwanka to score an easy try. Sivaraj had good game with his kicking as he converted this difficult kick. (DSSC 00-24 SPC)

DS bounced back immediately with a try through a pick and go from their hooker C.S.Sanjana as the Peterites were clumsy with their defence and the conversion was unsuccessful for the Dons. There were lots of missed opportunities by both teams but the Peterites were dominant in the set pieces. Umar Mohideen scored the bonus point try for the Peterites as he powered himself over the DS defence to increase his teams lead. Sivaraj bisected the uprights with ease. (DSSC 05-31 SPC)

Final try of the match was scored by the skipper Diyath Fernando as he his speed and running angles was unstoppable for the Dons as he went over to score his second try of the game. Unfortunately Sivaraj missed his conversion. (DSSC 05-36 SPC)
