Leaders’ trophy Hockey Championship 2017 of General Sir John Kothelawala Defence University concluded successfully for the 3rd consecutive year at Colombo Astro turf.

 Colonel C.S. Padmashantha graced the occasion as the chief guest of the opening ceremony and Major General I.P. Ranasinghe attended the occasion as the chief guest of the closing ceremony. There were 9 teams competing against each other for the championship at the tournament.

The participants of the tournament were University of Sri Jayawardanapura, University of Sabaragamuwa, Sri Lanka Institue of Information Technology (SLIIT),Uva Welassa University, University of Colombo, University of Ruhuna and National School of Business Management (NSBM).

University of Sri Jayawardanapura, Kothelawala Defence team ‘A’, Kothelawala Defence team ‘B’ and University of Ruhuna were selected for the semi-final round in the tournament.

In the first semi-final match which took place between KDU ‘A’ and KDU ‘B’ ended as 1-0 where KDU ‘A’ qualified for the final match. In the following semi-final, University of Sri Jayawardanapura obtained an easy win against University of Ruhuna with a score of 3-0 and qualified to the final round.

KDU ‘B’ and University of Ruhunu competed against each other in the 3rd place match. University of Ruhuna was able to score a goal and grab the second runners-up trophy in this tournament.

In the final match, University of Sri Jayawardanapura was beaten by KDU ‘A’ with a score of 2-0. M.A.Salinga and Banadaranayake of KDU scored one goal each in the final match. UOJ did not obtain any opportunity to score a goal since KDU made possession in both offensive and defensive aspects throughout the match.

Lakmal Senevirathne of University of Sri Jayawardanapura was awarded the man of the match while Pasindu Wanigasooriya and Nisal Kalinga of KDU were awarded the best goal keeper and best player of the tournament.
