Junior National Weightlifting Championships – 2013

The Junior National Weightlifting round 1 takes place evaluating the 17 year men’s and women’s performances throughout the country.

 

Organized by the Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation and the Beruwala Sports Club the Junior National Weightlifting Championship was taking place in D.S.Senanayake Vidyalaya, Beruwala. The first day of the event comprised of17 year men’s and women’s all weight category championships. Opening up the weightlifting tournaments Deputy Mayor of Beruwala Municipal Council, Hon. Sajith Dewapriya stated his whole hearted enthusiasm towards an event of national scale taking place in Beruwala Sports Club. He also added that weightlifting as a sport not common among Sri Lankan youth should be endorsed and encouraged the Beruwala Sports Club as well as the Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation for its efforts.

The weight categories for the men’s events were different from that of the women’s. The weight range for 17 year men’s was from 45 Kgs to over 94 Kgs and 44Kgs to over 69 Kgs in Women’s category. As the performances recorded however, the weight lifters were able to outscore their lifting abilities. The best performances of men’s 45kg to 56 kg weight categories were at an impressive increment. Y.D.I.Kumara of Kurunegala WLC had a best of 177kg at Under 50 weight category while E.M.S. Sashika Eakanayake also from Kurunegala WLC had an astounding performance of 205kg at the under 56 Kg weigh category.

The lifting skills were a drop from that point onwards paradox to the weight category increments. The men’s Under 65 Kg to 85Kg weight categories were all stuck under a best of 180 Kgs at the frits place and the overall performances averaging to about 160 Kgs. The highest recorded weight lifted in the tournament was by S.D.I.U.Senadeera of Polonnaruwa WLC with 210kg competing in the Under 94 weight category. Competing at the highest weight, over 94kg D.C.S.Rathwaththa from Trinity College, Kandy had a best of 180kg yet below the overall best performances of the tournament. 

Women’s overall performances leveled to an average 70 Kgs and the best of 112kg was recorded from D.D.Dinuda Abeysekara of Royal College, Polonnaruwa. Yet on the performance was impressive for her weight category, under 48 Kgs.  In comparison, at under 44 Kgs  A.G.V.C.Jayawickrama of Habarana MV recorded the best at 58kg and at under 63 Kgs the best was a mere 70Kgs. The viewer are looking at an optimistic future for Dinuda Abeysekara in the upcoming years.
