Janadhipathi Vidyalaya and Royal College lift the U 19 Hockey Championship

The Under 19 National Hockey Championship 2014, organized by the Ministry of Education together with the Ministry of Sports was concluded yesterday with Nawala Janadhipathi Vidyalaya emerging champions while convincingly beating the defending champions, Sangamitta Balika Vidyalaya, Matale by 02 points to 01 at the finals played over at Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya grounds.

It was a disastrous game for Matale Sangamitta being the defending champions and losing against Janadhipathi this year. Sandali Perera from Janadhipathi was lucky enough to score the first goal of the match. Nevertheless the Matale stickers never gave up hope and scored a goal through the Centre Half to read the score board 01 all.

While Sangamitta girls were playing a defensive game to avoid the strong attacking line of Janadipathi, Chamodhi Chandeepa of Janadhipathi scored the winning goal to lift the Under 19 National Hockey Championship 2014 and Sandali Perera of Janadhipathi Vidyalaya became the best player of the tournament.

In the 3rd & 4th playoff match, Pandaura Balika Vidyalaya beats Visakha Vidyalaya by 01 point to 00.

In the boys category, Royal College, Colombo prevailed as the Under 19 National Hockey Champions 2014 by beating Zahira College, Matale 01-00 yesterday at the Astro Hockey Turf, Colombo. Both teams struggled equally battling each other mentally and physically to gain the upper hand. Centre Forward of Royal College, Malik Rasanga was the man of the match to draw the first and the last blood of the finals to make Royal College feel majestic on the day. For the 3rd & 4th playoff, Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa beat the D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo to secure the 3rd place by 01 point to 00.

It was a devastating tournament for the stickers from Matale with a proud history of Hockey to be beaten by  Colombo. Nevertheless, the Colombo stickers were remarkable in winning both the Hockey Championships.
