The annual Under 19 schools cricket fixture between Ananda College Colombo and S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia will be played for the Atapattu-Halangode challenge trophy from this season onwards.
The inaugural Atapattu-Halangode challenge trophy encounter is scheduled to be played on the 6th and 7th of January 2020, at the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC) Grounds, the home ground of the two legendary cricketers of the respective schools in whose honor the trophy has been named.
Marvan Atapattu, one of the most stylish batsmen to play for Sri Lanka, captained Ananda College, before going on to represent SSC and eventually Sri Lanka. He also captained his club in 2001-2002 and the National Test Team from 2002-2006.
Atapattu scored six double centuries and sixteen centuries in his Test career, which included centuries against all existing Test-playing nations at the time. After retiring as a player, Atapattu went on to become Sri Lanka’s head coach too.
Mahinda Halangode, the left arm paceman, incidentally played junior cricket at Ananda College before moving on to the School by the Sea, where he represented the Thomian 1st XI Cricket Team. His most famous contribution to Thomian cricket was the 70* he scored on the 3rd day of the centenary Royal-Thomian match, where he batted out the entire 3rd session with C P Richards to deny the Royalists, led by Ranjan Madugalle, of an imminent victory.
Halangode went on to captain the Thomian 1st XI in 1981, before joining SSC and eventually went on to Captain the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team.
In the last meeting of these two cricketing powerhouses, S. Thomas’ defeated Ananda by an innings and 95 runs, the first win for the Thomians since 1975, the first at Ananda Mawatha and the first by an innings versus Ananda.
