Former SL Coach Bruce Yardley passes away

Former Test Cricketer, Bruce Yardley, who played 33 Tests and 7 ODIs for Australia died after a long battle with cancer at the age of 71 in the Kununurra District hospital in Australia this morning. (27/03/2019).

Yardley earned his baggy green in a Test match vs India in 1978 and played his first ODI vs West Indies in the same year. He was the first-choice spinner for Australia in the early 80s and was one of the best fielders of his time.

He retired from international cricket after the tour of Sri Lanka in 1983 and ended his career with 126 Test wickets.

After his retirement, he turned to coaching as he took the responsibility of the head coach position for Sri Lanka in 1997, just after the team’s World Cup win.

He is well known for his support of Sri Lanka legend, Muttiah Muralitharan when there were speculations of him being a chucker. He is one of the main influencers who encouraged Muralitharan to bowl one of his mystery deliveries; the doosra.

He was also a famous commentator on TV and radio before he was diagnosed with cancer.
