The 30th Novice AVI MBA Badminton Championships concluded on the 7th of April 2013 at S Thomas courts, Mt Lavinia

Under the patronage of Mr. Nandadasa Rajapaksha – the chairmen of D Samason and Sons Industries –proud sponsors of the AVI 30th MBA Novice Badminton Championships, the event kicked off for the final day.  Along with him were Mr. Rohan Somawansa (Guest of honor), Mr. Sisara Pathamadewa and Mr. Devinda kulatunga ,once again representing the  D Samason and Sons Industries, brought in true decorum to the event at their arrival.

In the men’s and women’s doubles finals,  Lahiru Kodithuwakku and Pathum Liyanage teamed up with their best performances for the final men’s doubles game and their efforts were paid off. Navinda Malintha and Nalinda Salitha were a solid opponent but were surely not resilient enough for the power play. Lahiru and Pathum won back to back from a 21/11 to a 21/18.

The Women’s double finals were truly a modern version of the ancient game of battledore & shuttlecock. Kesara Amaradasa siding with Bagya De Silva at a moderate start to the game; however, was struggling to a strong spell at the end by the opponents. They were limited to 12 points as Indika Gunasena and Nadeesha Sugathadasa won the first game. Similarly the second was an easy win for the leading team securing their overall victory on the women’s doubles championship.

The evening was followed by a stunning dance: an aesthetical representation ‘Suramba Walliya’.The vivid portrayal of Sri Lankan culture was brought to life by Western province Aesthetic resort dancing group attached to the Ministry of Art and Culture in the Western province. Moving on from the entertainment the focus was on to the sustainability of the sport outstation. The key roles of the Mercantile Badminton Association also feature the Badminton Development Project which parted it’s resources to make badminton a lifestyle even outstation. As per the 2013 championships they have picked Badulla Daharmadutha College and Apmara Maha Kappetipola Navodya School Mahaoya to give away Badminton equipment.
