CR&FC Centenary Rugby Sevens Tournament launched

Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club (CR&FC) most commonly known as CR and fondly referred to as the ‘Red Shirts’ launched the CR&FC Centenary Rugby Sevens tournament which is scheduled to be held over three days from the 31st March to the 2nd April 2023. 

A trailblazer club, CR&FC was founded in 1922 by Colonel E.H Joseph and was dedicated to the Ceylonese, as people of this land were known then. Over the next century, The Red Shirts have achieved brilliance on and off the field while being the most iconic rugby club in the country and have mapped out a year-long celebration to mark their Centenary year.

Organized as part of the Centenary celebrations of the club, the three-day sevens competition will see A division Men’s & Women’s clubs competing alongside twelve top Under 19 school teams that will compete in an invitational competition. Four overseas teams will also compete in the women’s segment adding international flavor to the three-day event.

The first day of the competition will see the invited twelve schools under 19 teams who will be divided into three groups of four, competing against each other in round robin format before concluding the day competing in the Cup/Plate quarterfinals.

The second day will feature the round-robin games of the men’s & women’s preliminary games and the quarterfinals with the third and the final day set to feature the semifinals and the finals of all three segments.

Men’s Teams – CH&FC, CR&FC, Havelocks SC, Kandy SC, Air Force SC, Army SC, Navy SC, Police SC

Women’s Teams – CR&FC, Air Force SC, Army SC, Navy SC, Team from Australia, Team from India, Team from Thailand, Combined team

Invited School Teams – D.S Senanayake College, Isipathana College, Kingswood College, Royal College, St. Anthony’s College, St. Joseph’s College, St. Peter’s College, S.Thomas’ College, Trinity College, Vidyartha College, Wesley College, Zahira College

Speaking at the launch event President of CR&FC Ted Hiran Muttaih said “The CR&FC Centenary Rugby sevens is probably the most looked forward to event in the centenary calendar by  rugby players and fans alike, Response from the teams invited has been fantastic and we are looking forward to memorable three days at the Longdon Place”

His sentiments were echoed by a past president of the club Jehan Canagaratne,  who is also the chairman of the Centenary Committee. He thanked the sponsors who have come forward to support the Red Shirts during their centenary celebrations and also outlined the centenary calendar of events which will continue till September this year.
