One of the most underrated club teams in the recent past, Bloomfield Cricket & Athletic Club is rejuvenated this 2015/16 season with an excellent mix of young and experienced players and have set sights on winning few trophies.

Bit of History

Bloomfield Athletic and Cricket Club was founded in the year 1892 and currently it is one of the oldest cricketing clubs in the island. During their rich history, they have won eight Premier League trophies and five Premier Limited Overs trophies. The Reid Avenue club holds the distinction of introducing one of the finest all-rounders in world cricket, Sanath Jayasooriya. It was also the home to the likes of Kumar Dharamasena, Brendon Kuruppu and many more acclaimed cricketers in the past. Last season under Suraj Randiv’s captaincy, Bloomfield had an average season where they could not reach any of the finals.

Key Players

Hard-hitting opening batsman Dilshan Munaweera leads the Bloomfield team for the 2015/16 season while Madawa Warnapura acts as the deputy. Munaweera is fresh from his successful stint in Bangladesh where he represented Sylhet Super Stars for the BPL 2015. He has amassed over 3000 first-class runs while he has taken over 100 wickets in all formats of the game with his off-spinners.

The stylish 27-year old batsman, Madawa is the son of Sri Lanka’s first Test captain, Bandula Warnapura. With over 3000 first-class runs inclusive of 7 centuries, he is by one of the most accomplished batsmen in their lineup. He led the team during Munaweera’s absence

Experienced Dilhan Cooray, Nipun Karunanayake and Primosh Perera will need to put their hands up and score runs heavily if Bloomfield can get to championship glory this season.

Earmarked as the next Chaminda Vaas, Vishwa Fernando is an exciting talent who will lead the Bloomfield bowling attack. Fernando was the most penetrative quick in the 2014/15 Premier League Tournament, having claimed 40 scalps at an average of 21.97. Fast-bowling all-rounder Lahiru Madusanka who represented Sri Lanka A in their tour of New Zealand can also be a lethal weapon on pitches which are conducive to the seamers. His attacking batting is an added bonus to whichever team he represents. Left-arm spin duo of Chathura Randunu and Upul Indrasiri will use all their experience to count in demolishing opposition batting lineups.
