An under 18 inter schools invitational 7-a-side football tournament organized by Zahira college is scheduled to kick off on the 26th of October in Zahira College Grounds.

Organized for the ninth consecutive year, Zahira Super 16 Soccer 7s is partaken by sixteen schools repressing the enitre island.  The event will take place parallel to the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Past Prefects Association of Zahira College. Following the theme ‘I’m Sri Lankan’ the tournament will be played for the ‘Peace Cup’. The all island competition is with the intention of promoting the importance of brotherhood, peace and harmony within all religions at school level.

The organizing committee has identified the importance of brotherhood and the promotion of peace and harmony among all ethnic and religious groups. The invited school teams from the North, South, East and West will battling head on in Maradana symbolizing brotherhood.

“ Past pupils bring a lot of strength to the school by organizing various events and engaging in sports activities that bring about social values to all communities; I personally endorse such efforts ” lamented the Principal of Zahira College,Trizvii Marikkar.

The 16 teams were divided into four groups and the first round will be conducted on a league basis. The teams will then be drawn into four categories based on the placings in the first round. The categories are Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield Championship.

The winning team in the Cup will be presented with Rs. 50,000 while the Plate winners will receive Rs. 20,000. The total distribution of prize money will be Rs. 500,000. Special awards will also be presented to players who shine. The player of the tournament was presented with a bicycle last year.

The platinum sponsor of the tournament is Pyramid Wilmar (Pvt) Limited while the Gold Sponsor is Dialog Axiata.

The groupings are as follows:

Group A: Zahira Colombo, St. Joseph’s, St. Benedict’s and D.S. Senanayake.

Group B: Ananda, St. Thomas’ Matara, Isipathana and Hindu Colombo.

Group C: St. Mary’s Kegalle, Hindu Manippai, De Mazenod and ZahiraMawanella.

Group D: Maris Stella, Al Aqsa Kinniya, Holy Cross and Wesley.
