Veteran Kandy Sports Club Coach and former player Sean Wijesinghe has reportedly decided to stay back in Sri Lanka for the second round of the Dialog Rugby League.

Rumor had it that the young coach would be moving to Canada with his family at the end of the 1st round of the DRL, leaving the Island’s most successful club, Kandy SC’s Head Coach position open. However, he has opted to stay back since Kandy hadn’t secured enough of a cushion at the top of the Dialog Rugby League which he had hoped to have achieved by the end of the first round.

Speaking to ThePapare.com he said, “We are looking for an unbeaten season. I still have unfinished business in Sri Lanka. An 11-point cushion will be ideal at the start of the second round, we wanted to have the 11-cushion at the end of the first round. Since we couldn’t secure that target I decided to come back. My work in Sri Lanka isn’t done yet!”

Kandy SC are currently undefeated under Coach Wijesinghe for a streak of 30 matches. He has also led his club to three league and knock-out trophies since he first took the reins of the club in 2015, right after hanging up his boots as a player.

Wijesinghe is one of the youngest coaches to win a Dialog Rugby League title, the legendary player turned coach is on the hunt for his 4th successive league title this season and Kandy are ever so close to achieving it.

After winning the league as captain for Kandy Sports Club in the 2014/15 season, he took on the coaching role for the side and has continued on winning ways ever since. An illustrious career that spanned over a decade at the Hill country club, Wijesinghe joined the coaching outfit of Kandy as an understudy to Johanne Taylor and was handed the responsibility of marshaling Kandy in the 2015/16 season. He can look back at his debut season with pride as Kandy SC emerged as triple champions and were unbeaten throughout the season.
