The 12th Gunner Supercross organized by the Artillery regiment of Sri Lanka Army and Sri Lanka Automobile Drivers Association (SLADA) was held at the Gunner race track, Mineriya yesterday (06th August).

Conducted as the second edition of the CEAT SLADA championship, Gunners Supercross was a resounding success with the drivers and riders all commending the quality of the race track. Despite being situated in the dry zone, the weather was kind to the competitors and the organizers had made arrangements for the track to be watered adequately in order to keep the dust to a controllable level.

Gunner SupercrossGayan Sandaruwan, Sri Lanka’s premier motocross rider who has won numerous championships, showed glimpse of his form back when he was in his prime, In the first race of Group MX – OVER 175CC UPTO 250CC (4T) & OVER 100CC UPTO 125CC (2T) Sandaruwan had a very poor start leaving the blocks as the last rider. Current national champion in the event, Ishan Dassanayake managed to become the race leader and was battling it out with Shehan C Adikari who was making a return from Injury. Sandaruwan who had managed to claw his way to the 5th spot led a charge in the fourth lap overtaking the riders in front of him and managed to get in sight of Dassanayke with just two laps to spare in the  eight lap race. Dassanayake managed to see off Sandaruwan’s challenge until the last turn of the final lap but Gayan with all the experience behind him took the outside line and managed to make his way to the checkered flag and win an entertaining race.

Gunner SupercrossThe second race of the same competition did not feature Ishan Dassanayake as he had faced some issues with the engine of his bike and Gayan Sandarruwan was the favorite to clinch the top spot of the race and with it the title as the Best rider of the race meet. But as thrilling and exciting racing is uncertainty is a major part of racing and this was evident when Gayan Sandaruwan who was comfortably in the lead 04 laps in to the race suddenly saw his engine stall. Although managing to restart the bike and get back to the race, he collided with Jaques Gunawardane who was in second place and lost the leading position in the race. With half the race yet to pan out, the experienced Sandaruwan did not give up but had to face further heartbreak as his machine gave up on him yet again in the final lap and he had to be satisfied with a fifth place finish in the second race but had done enough and had gathered a point more than Evon Gurusinghe to be lay claim to the Best rider award at Gunners Supercross.

Ashan Silva, who has stormed the Islands gravel circuits after his international success in the 24hour endurance challenge in Dubai, managed to finally notch up his maiden Best driver award at Gunner supercross. Competing in the SL GT cars up to 3500cc event fondly known as the ‘Super car’ event, Silva managed to win both races he participated in, convincingly. Young and upcoming driver Kushan Peiris was the only menace Silva had to deal with as he was on Silva’s tail throughout both races and even managed to take the lead at one point in the first race.

Speaking to ThePapare.com Champion driver Ashan Silva added;

“I am happy I could win the overall championship here, I have always had trouble with this track and something or the other keeps going wrong. But this time I am glad everything fell in place and I managed to clinch the best driver’s award”

Commenting on the competition he faced from Kushan Peiris “He (Kushan) is a very good driver and I like the way he drives. He even managed to overtake me in the second race and I really want a few more of our drivers to come up to that standard so we will have a strong team Sri Lanka to go out and compete internationally.”

Race meet was conducted in a very organized manner with the competitors, spectators and the media present provided with the best possible facilities and the Artillery regiment of Sri Lanka Army and the members of SLADA needs to be commended on a job well done.
