Four matches of the Singer Schools ‘Under 19 Division 1’ Cricket Tournament 2018/19 were conducted today around the island. Left arm spinners Sandaru Dias and Ayesh Harshana guided Thurstan College to an innings victory over St. Anthony’s College.

Thurstan College, Colombo vs St. Anthony’s College, Wattala

Thurstan College managed to record a convincing innings victory over St. Anthony’s College in their Group D fixture which was worked off today at Thurstan College grounds. St. Anthony’s College resumed day two on 10 runs for 6 wickets and was bowled out for just 26 runs. Left arm spinner Sandaru Dias was brilliant with the ball for the hosts as he grabbed 3 scalps without conceding a single run.

After been asked to follow on, the visitors struggled again with the bat in the second innings as they managed to post only 104 runs all-out. Left arm spinner Ayesh Harshana was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4 wickets for 19 runs. Sandaru Dias impressed again with the ball picking up another 3 wicket haul for the hosts in the second innings.

St. Aloysius College, Galle vs St. Servatius College, Matara

St. Servatius College managed to defeat St. Aloysius College by 8 wickets in their Group C fixture, which was worked off today at Uyanwatta Stadium. St. Servatius College resumed day two on 71 runs 3 wickets and lost the remaining 7 wickets for just 79 runs. Manushka Samith and Shanuka Nikeshala bowled well for the lads from Galle as they shared 7 wickets among them.

Even though, St. Aloysius College began their second innings 18 runs ahead, their batsmen showed a very poor batting display as they were bundled out for just 58 runs, setting an easy target of 77 runs for the opposition to chase. Keshara Nuwantha demolished the batting line up of St. Aloysius College with the ball picking up 5 scalps for just 19 runs. The Matara boys chased down the target with ease in 13 overs with 8 wickets remaining.

President’s College, Kotte vs St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa

Traditional fixture between President’s College and St. Joseph Vaz College ended today in a draw at St. Sebastian grounds in Katuneriya. After being 22 runs for the loss of 2 wickets at stumps on day one, St. Joseph Vaz could only add another 105 runs to their overnight score as they were bundled out for 127 runs. Dinith Nelumdeniya starred with the ball picking up 4 wickets for 18 runs.

After been asked to follow on, the Wennappuwa lads showed a slightly better batting display in the second innings as they posted 149 runs for 8 wickets when umpires called stumps on day two. Dinith Nelumdeniya starred again with the ball picking up 3 wickets for 44 runs in the second innings.

Lumbini College, Colombo vs Moratu Maha Vidyalaya, Moratuwa

Traditional fixture between Lumbini College and Moratu Maha Vidyalaya commenced today at Moratu Vidyalaya grounds. Hosts’ skipper won the toss and opted to field first in their own backyard. Lumbini College was unable to post a significant total on the board as they were bundled out for just 109 runs. Vinura Nipun starred with the ball for the hosts picking up 4 wickets for 43 runs.

In reply, the hosts did not show a better batting display either as they were bowled out for just 98 runs. Madushan Dilakshana tried his best with the bat scoring 63 runs but the others did not support him at the other end. Ravishka Wijesiri picked up 3 wickets for 36 runs while Shavinga Gamlath and Prabath Madushanka grabbed 2 wickets each for the visitors.

Lumbini College batsmen began their second innings 11 runs ahead and were 6 runs for 1 wicket at stumps on day one. Match will continue tomorrow for day two.
