Umeshka Dilshan restricts Trinity; St. Aloysius’ win a thriller

Nalandian left-arm spinner Umeshka Dilshan’s terrific bowling spell of 5 for 24 kept Trinity College to 142 in their Singer-Cup division one Group A game which started today at the Asgiriya stadium.

Trinity skipper Shanogeeth Shanmuganathan won the toss and opted to bat first in their home conditions and they were bundled out for a below-par total 142 in 48.2 overs. Sri Lanka under 19 right-hander Hasitha Boyagoda top scored for the hosts with 35 while Hasintha Jayasooriya chipped in with 31 valuable runs. However, left-arm spinner Umeshka Dilshan ran through the Trinity batting line up with figures of 5 for 24.

In reply, the visitors were struggling on 15 for 2 wickets when rain stopped play.

Match will continue tomorrow for day two.

St. Aloysius’ College, Galle vs St. Servatius’ College, Matara

St. Aloysius College, Galle chased down 158 runs in 23 overs as they beat St. Servatius’ College, Matara by 3 wickets in a thrilling, nerve-wrecking traditional encounter which concluded today at Uyanwatta grounds in Matara.

Sri Lankan youth caps, Ashen Bandara and Hareen Buddhila put up solid efforts in the first innings to put the Aloysians in a commanding position. The hosts’ resumed day two with 95 runs behind but gave them a chance of clinching a comeback win by putting up 256 on the scoreboard.

Senior batsman Sandaru Nethmina top scored with 79 while wicket-keeper batsman Muditha Heshan smashed 46 useful runs. Left-arm spinner Hareen Buddila chipped in with 3 wickets to complete a match bag of 10 for 92.

The visitors had to make 158 runs in the fourth innings from the allotted 23 overs. Skipper Navindu Nirmal steered the chase scoring an unbeaten 38 including the winning runs and got able support from Pasindu Nanayakkara who struck a brisk 28 to reach the target in the final over of the match to complete their sixth outright win for the season..

St. Servatius College – 123 all out in 31.5 overs: Supun Kavindu 45, Sandaru Nethmina 31, Hareen Buddhila 7/26, Kavishka Dilshan 2/35.

St. Aloysius College – 222 all out in 56 overs: Ashen Bandara 126, Hareen Buddhila 25, Shashika Dulshan 3/42, Sandaru Nethmina 2/35.

Richmond College, Galle vs Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala

All-rounder Dhananjaya Lakshan excelled with both bat and ball as Richmond College dominated proceedings in their drawn Singer Cup traditional game against Maliyadeva College in Galle.

The Richmondites made a formidable first innings total of 270 in 66.4 overs. Left-handed opening batsman Lakshan top scored with a fine 87 while Adithya Siriwaradane and Sandun Mendis chipped in with valuable 30s. Left arm spinner and Devans’ Captain Damitha Silva was the most successful bowler for the visitors grabbing four wickets.

In reply, Maliyadeva was knocked out for a paltry 144 runs in 56.2 overs as the hosts enforced the follow-on. Left-handed middle order batsman Damitha Silva made a fighting 41 with the bat while young off-spinner Sandun Mendis captured 6 for 73 for the lads from Galle.

Following on, the visitors lost four wickets for 21 runs at close of play.
